T2MTU: “View Progress”

October 25, 2022

In last week’s tutorial, I showed you how to set up a checklist for your students using “Requirements” in Canvas. In that tutorial, I also mentioned that requirements were the foundation of lots of other cool Canvas features and automations, and today I’m going to show you one of those features: the View Progress screen.

Once you have Requirements set up within your course Modules, you can click on View Progress and, with just a single click, see a bird’s eye view of each student’s progress in your course, including which requirements and modules they have completed, and which modules/assignments have yet to be unlocked or submitted.

Click the video below to learn more, or keep scrolling for a written tutorial with screenshots.

Using “View Progress” in Canvas Modules

Step 1: If you have not already done so, set up “requirements” for any item, assignment, or activity within Canvas that you want to be able to track on the View Progress screen. (Click HERE for a tutorial that explains how to set up these requirements.)

Step 2: Once you have at least some Requirements set, you will see a “View Progress” module in the upper right hand corner of your Modules page. Click that button to open up the View Progress view.

Step 3: This will open up the “progressions” page in your Canvas course. The modules in which you have requirements set will appear in the center/left area of the page, and your list of students will appear on the right. Click on a student’s name to see their progress. Each module heading will be marked as locked, unlocked, complete, or in progress, and any module requirements that have NOT been completed will be listed.

(Note: Items that you have not selected as “requirements,” will NOT show up here.)

If you are looking specifically for other ways to view your student’s progress at a glance, contact ID3. We can use tools like badges or customized grading schemes to help you create a progress view tailored to your course and grading style.
