Today’s Tuesday Tune-Up is a continuation of our AI Toolbox Series, showing you prompting techniques you can use with AI “chatbot” style tools. Today’s prompting technique involves asking AI to point out missing information

Click on the video below to watch this prompting strategy in action, or keep scrolling for more information.

Using the “What Am I Missing” Prompting Strategy

This strategy can work with any text-based generative AI tool that allows for back-and-forth “conversation” between the user and the AI. A few examples of this kind of tool include:

While chatting with one of these tools, use some variation of the following prompt. (The exact questions or words are not important, though you are welcome to copy and paste this exactly, adding your own information into the [bracketed] text.)

Below this message, I will paste [an email]
that I am sending out to [intended audience].
Imagine you are [describe recipient].
After reading the text below, what follow up questions would you have?
What information is missing? What facts are not clear from the email itself?

Once AI replies, you can use its feedback to update your email, or even ask the AI to create a new draft for you based on the answers you provide.

(Pro Tip: Use SHIFT-ENTER to move to a new line without submitting your response.)
