T2MTU: Turn on Module Prerequisites

So far in this Automations Series, you’ve learned how to turn on Requirements within a Module to create a checklist for students and how to use View Progress to see which students have completed which requirements. In this tutorial, you’re going to learn how to use “Prerequisites” to lock one module until one — or all — of the requirements in a previous module are completed.

Click the video below to watch the tutorial, or read the directions (with screenshots) below.

Turning on Module Prerequisites

Once you have requirements set within a module in Canvas, you can use “prerequisites” to lock a subsequent module until those requirements are met.

Note: Within this tutorial, I’m going to use the phrases “trigger module” and “results module” to differentiate between the module that contains the triggering requirements (trigger module) and the module that is released when those requirements are met (results module)

Step One: Prep!

  • Make sure you have at least one Requirement set within the Trigger Module. (You can go back and add additional requirements later if necessary.)
  • Determine whether you want students to “complete all of these requirements” or just “one of these requirements,” and select the appropriate radial button.
  • Also make sure that, when you are looking at the overall Modules page in your course, the Results Module appears AFTER the Trigger Module. (You cannot turn on a Prerequisite for the FIRST module on a page.)

Step Two: Go to the Results Module, click the 3-dot icon in the far right hand corner, and click Edit to open up the Edit Module Settings Screen.

Step Three: Click “+ Add prerequisite” (remember this is in the “Results Module,” not the “Trigger Module”).

Then, select the appropriate “Trigger Module” from the drop down list that appears.

Then, click “Update Module.”

Step Four: If this is an active course, you will likely see the pop up menu shown below. If you want this new prerequisite to apply to all students (even those who may have previously met the requirements for moving on), click “Re-Lock Modules.” If not, click “Continue.”

Step Five: Use the “Student View” option to test out your new automation and make sure it works as you intend.

As always, if you have any questions about this or any other types of Automations in your course, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
