T2MTU: Open an Incognito Window in Chrome

In Canvas, you are probably familiar with the “View as Student” button that lets you view things within your course as a student sees them. (Click HERE for more information about that.)

But did you know, that there is a similar function within the Chrome Browser itself? Whether you are trying to view a Google form, a published Canva document, or an online poll from someone else’s perspective, using an “Incognito” browser window can let you see what that webpage looks like from the perspective of someone who is not currently logged in to whatever accounts you’ve used to create the page.

Note: This process will NOT work well for pages within Canvas, as students MUST be logged into Canvas to view its contents. But it works great for checking the visibility and functionality of things like Google Forms, Google Doc template links, shared Canva files, class activities, etc.

Click on the video below for more information, or keep scrolling for a written tutorial.

Open an “Incognito” Browser Window

Step Zero (optional): Copy the website address you want to test to your computer’s clipboard.

Step One: Within Chrome, click on the 3-dot snowman menu in the upper right hand corner of your browser window, and select “New Incognito Window.”

This will open up a new browser window with a black background and information about how you have gone “Incognito.”

Step Two: From here you can paste any URLs you copied to your clipboard in step zero, or open a website as you normally would.

While in the Incognito Browser, you will see the webpage, online document, or activity with the same access as anyone else with the link (who is not logged into your accounts).

Step Three: To stop using Incognito mode, just close the incognito browser window.

Please let us know if you have any questions about Chrome, Incognito Mode, or the use of technology in your teaching!
