T2MTU: Module Checklists via “Requirements”
October 18, 2022
by Amanda Dills
In today’s video, I am kicking off a new series that will help you AUTOMATE your Canvas course. Specifically, these steps will help you Automate the releasing of content to students based on a criteria that you specify – maybe they can’t go on to Module 2 until they’ve passed Module 1 with a 70% or above.
There are lots of different things you can Automate in your Canvas course, and most of them are based off of Requirements that you set within a Canvas module. So, in today’s Tuesday Tune Up, I’m going to show you how to turn on those Requirements, so that you will be able to use them within more complicated automations in the coming weeks. But, on top of that, by turning on these requirements, you’ll also be setting up a kind of checklist for your students within your Canvas Modules page, which can really help them keep track of their progress within your course.
To learn more about setting up requirements in Canvas, watch the video below, or keep reading below the video for more detailed directions and screenshots.
Turning on Requirements in a Module
Turning on requirements within a module serves several purposes:
- It is the first step in setting up several different kinds of Canvas Course Automations.
- It gives your students a light, “checklist-style” view on the Modules page in your course.

To turn on these requirements, follow the following steps:
Step 1: Make sure you have the items you want to “require” added to their appropriate Module on the Modules page in Canvas.
Step 2: Click on the 3-dot button on the right hand side of the Module Heading, and select Edit.

Step 3: Click “Add Requirement.”

Step 4: Select the item within the module, and the “requirement criteria” you would like to set for that item. You will have different criteria options, depending on what type of item it is.
Step 5: REPEAT THIS PROCESS for every item for which you want to add a “checklist circle” or a completion requirement.
Step 6: Click “Update Module.”
Note: You may see a “Requirements Changed” pop up warning appear. Read this module carefully – especially if you are making changes to requirements in a module students have already completed, and select the appropriate option.
At this point, you have set up the “checklist” appearance within the module for your students, and you will now have the option to set up various types of automations, and we will go over these in more detail in coming weeks.
