T2MTU: Instructor vs Student Grade View, Points vs. Percentages

In last week’s Tuesday 2-Minute Tune Up, I showed you how to change the format of a grade in your Gradebook, from points to Percentages, letter grades, or a custom grading scheme.
But what if you want your students to see one grade format, while you see another? Well, the process is unintuitive, but it is possible (assuming you are planning to enter grades from the Gradebook itself, and not speed grader). Watch the video below, or keep reading for more information.
*Note, this process is focused specifically on Point and Percentage-based grading; contact me if you want help setting up a similar system with a specific Grading Scheme, such as letter or complete/incomplete.
Using Different Grade Formats in Instructor vs. Student View: Points/Percentages
First, determine what grading format – points or percentages–you want your students to see.
Then, go to the Assignment settings for that particular assignment, and select the appropriate option from the “Display Grade As” drop down menu. (Note: you cannot make changes to this setting for Classic Quizzes.)
This will update the format for both the student view of the gradebook AND the Speed Grader view for the instructor.
Then, decide if you want to see the grade in a different format when inputting grades in the Gradebook.
If so, go to your Canvas gradebook, find the column in question, click on the 3-dot menu for that column, select “Enter Grades As” and select the appropriate option.
This will change the grading format that you see in the Gradebook as the instructor, but will NOT change the format that your students see, or the format that you see the grade in Speed Grader.
So, for example, if an instructor wanted to see the gradebook grades in points, but to have their students see the grades in percentages, they would:
- Set the “Display Grades as” parameters on the assignment itself as Percentages.
- Set the “Enter Grades as” setting in the Gradebook as Points
See the table below for detailed information about various points/percentage settings and how they affect the grade column.
Display Grade As | Enter Grades As | Instructor Gradebook View | Instructor Speed Grader View | Student View |
Points | (unchanged – points) | points only in grade column | points only | points only |
Points | changed to percentage | percentage only in grade column | points only | points only |
Percentage | (unchanged – %) | percentages only in grade column | percentage only | percentage and points possible |
Percentage | changed to points | points only in grade column | percentage only | percentage and points possible |
