We’re going to kick off the Tuesday 2-Minute Tune Up Series this fall with some “quick wins” – things you can apply to your Canvas course today to start speeding up and optimizing your Canvas workflows.

This week, we’re focusing on Canvas keyboard shortcuts, specifically those you can use in the Gradebook.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts in the Canvas Gradebook

Here are a few different keyboard shortcuts you can use within the Canvas Gradebook:

  • Arrow Keys: press the up, down, right, and left arrow keys to move from cell to cell, just like in a spreadsheet.
  • Enter: After typing in a score in the gradebook, press Enter to lock in that score and move to the next cell down.
  • Esc: Turns off “edit score” mode for that cell, leaving the score and column selected.
    • HINT: Press Esc before any of the following keyboard shortcuts
  • M: Opens the menu of possible actions for that column, without having to click the 3-dot snowman menu.
  • G: Takes you directly to the assignment selected.
  • C: Allows you to update the status or add a comment to a student’s grade, similar to the speed grader view.
  • S: Sorts students, based on the column selected.
    • HINT: This even works in the Notes column, which can be really helpful if you are using that column to keep track of AM/PM students, their sending school, groups, etc.
