T2MTU: Displaying Pronouns in Canvas

Have you noticed that some accounts in Canvas now have pronouns listed after the display name? Displaying pronouns is a really simple way that you can make your online classroom feel just a little more inclusive and welcoming, and it’s also something that your students may be asking you about, so I’m going to show you how to turn this feature on and off and edit your own pronouns in today’s Tuesday 2-Minute-Tune Up.

Click the video below to watch, or keep scrolling to see written directions and screenshots.

Display (or Change) Your Pronouns in Canvas

  • Click on your Account link in the very upper left hand corner of y our Canvas screen. Then click “Settings.”

From here, in the top section, you’ll see Pronouns listed as the 4th options down. By default, this is going to be set to “None,” which in this case really just means, “none specified.”

If you want to add or change your pronouns, click “Edit Settings.”

Then choose your pronouns from the drop down menu that appears. You can either choose one of the pronoun sets listed, or you can choose No Pronouns. If you choose No Pronouns, the overall effect will be the same as if you never added a pronoun.

Once you are done, click “Update Settings.” Your pronouns will now display next to your name in places like the “People” tab or the Gradebook.
