In the tutorial below, you will learn how to use the new “Magic Expand” feature in Canva to extend the borders of an image.
Click the video below to watch the tutorial, or keep scrolling for step-by-step directions.
Using Canva “Magic Expand”
(In this tutorial, I assume you can open Canva, begin a design, and add an image. However, if you need help with this, please contact ID3, and we would be delighted to assist you!)
Step One: Select the image you want to expand and click “Edit Photo.” Then click on “Magic Expand.”

Step Two: Determine how far past its current borders you would like to expand the photo.
- Select “Whole Page” if you want the image to fill the page.
- Select “1:1” if you would like the image to be a square.
- Select “Freeform” if you would like to manually select the dimensions of the image.
- If you select “Freeform,” you will be able to move the image corners to indicate where you would like the image expanded.
Then, click “Magic Expand.”

It may take a while for Canva to generate your image expansion options.
Step Three: Canva will give you one or more options of ways the AI could expand the image. Select the one you like best, or choose “Generate new results.” Select “Done” when you are satisfied with your expanded image.
