T2MTU: Canvas’s Layer & Arrange Tool
by Amanda Dills
December 5, 2023
Today’s Tuesday Tune-Up tutorial features a “hidden gem” of a tool that allows you to make lots of advanced edits to your design: the Layer and Arrange tool. This tool allows you to easily visualize and manipulate the front-to-back order of everything in your design. It also lets you customize the exact size of an element or fine-tune its alignment.

Canva’s Layer & Arrange Tool
Step 1: To access the layer and arrange tool, select one or more objects in your design by clicking (or shift-clicking).
Step 2: Select “Position” from the edit bar menu… OR right-click, then select Layer > Show Layers.

This will bring up the Arrange/Layers menu, and you can switch between the two different menus using their labels at the top of the menu.

In the Arrange Menu…
You have options to do the following:
- Do basic layer edits similar to what you would have in PowerPoint or Google Slides
- Align one or more items to the Top, Middle, Bottom, Left, Center, or Right side of the image.
- Set a specific Width, Height, Ratio, Rotation, or location of an element.

In the Layers Menu…
You can click and drag individual elements to whatever position in the design “stack” you want them to have.
Toggle between “All” and “Overlapping” to determine whether you see EVERY item on this list or only the items that overlap with the currently suggested item(s).
