Today’s Tuesday Tune-Up is a continuation of our AI Toolbox Series. However, instead of providing you with a specific tool to try, I’m going to teach you one of my favorite “prompting” techniques. I call it the, “Ask Me Some Questions,” technique.

Click on the video below to watch this prompting strategy in action, or keep scrolling for more information.

Using the “Ask Me” Prompting Strategy

This strategy can work with any text-based generative AI tool that allows for back-and-forth “conversation” between the user and the AI. A few examples of this kind of tool include:

While chatting with one of these tools, use the following of prompt:

In a moment, I am going to ask you to [whatever task you're going to ask the AI to complete]. Ask me some questions that can help you complete this task.

At this point, the AI should ask you a series of questions. Here is an example of one such request and the questions asked in response.

The user, then, should answer as many of the questions as they can.

(Pro Tip: Use SHIFT-ENTER to move to a new line without submitting your response.)

Once you do this, the AI should be able to successfully complete the task you have requested.
