T2MTU: Adding Parent Observers

Do parents of Francis Tuttle high school students have the ability to see their students’ grades and progress? Absolutely!
Do we automatically set up those parent observer accounts for parents? Nope!

Our Canvas system has the ability to set up “Parent Observer Accounts” for the parents of high school students. These accounts are automatically enrolled in the courses in which their student is enrolled, and they have the ability to see things like course grades. Multiple parents can have observer accounts for the same student if they wish, but the only way to set up those accounts is for the student to log into their Canvas account and generate an observer pairing code, which is then used by the parent to create their own Canvas account.

Set up a Parent Observer account

Students and parents will work together to complete these steps and set up a Parent Observer account in Canvas.

1. Have the student to be observed log into Canvas as normal, preferably on a desktop computer (rather than a mobile device).

2. Click on the “Account” button in the upper left hand side of the screen.

4. Click on Pair with Observer on the right hand (or bottom) area of the screen.

5. Make note of the observer code that appears, either by writing it down or copying it to your computer clipboard.

6. Click on OK

7. Either log out of the student’s account switch to a different computer to set up the parent account.

8. On the Canvas login screen (https://canvas.francistuttle.edu), click on the “Parent of a Canvas User?” link.

9. Type in the name, email, and password the parent wants to use; then add the Student Pairing Code from step 5 here.

10. Check the box to agree with the terms of use, and then click “Start Participating.”
