Add a Clip from a Longer YouTube Video Into Canvas
Part 1: Get customized embed code from YouTube
Step One: Select your video, and make note of when you want the clip to start and end in minutes and seconds.
Step Two: Convert your start and end times to total number of seconds. There are a few ways you can do this:
- Use the formula total seconds = (60 x Number of Minutes) + Number of Seconds
- Use a converter like this one.
Step Three: Open the Embed Code window, by clicking “Share” and then “Embed”
Step Four: Click the “Start at” checkbox, and add your chosen clip start time in minutes and seconds.
You should see the given embed code add “start=##” (where ## is the total number of seconds for your chosen start point).
Step Five: Double click your mouse after the number of seconds that just appeared in your embed code, so that you can add additional text. Type the following:
&end=xx
(xx = the total number of seconds for the point at the video where you want your embedded clip to end)
Step Six: Click the “Copy” button to add the full embed code to your clipboard.
Part 2: Add video clip to Canvas
Step One: Open up the page, quiz, announcement, etc. where you want to add your video clip in Edit Mode.
Step Two: Find and click the “Embed” button in the Rich Content Editor.
It looks like a cloud with two “coding” brackets, and you may have to click the 3-dot “more” menu on the right hand end of your editor controls in order to find it.
Step Three: Paste the customized embed code you copied from YouTube in the pop up box that appears, and double check that the “start=xx&end=xx” code is present. Then click Submit
Step Four: Save/Publish the edits you made to the page/quiz/assignment/announcement in Canvas, and double check that your video is playing as intended.
One Important Note:
While this method will only play your chosen clip when students click on the Play button, students WILL have the ability to view the entire video if they choose.
