5 Reasons to Try Slido.com

In today’s blog post, I’m going to introduce you to a tool I recently discovered that I think lots of instructors could benefit from. The tool is called Slido.
I discovered Slido when I was looking for a streamlined way to faciliate my Canvas Q&A sessions for the Professional Development Day for instructors on January 2nd. I needed something that would easily let participants in my sessions submit and upvote questions, and Slido fits the bill and then some. So, in this post, I’m going to share with you 5 reasons you might want to try using Slido with your students.
5 Reasons to Use Slido in your Classroom
Reason 1: Convenient Q&A Interface
As I wrote above, a need for a simple and elegant Q&A tool is what lead me to find Slido in the first place. With Slido, you can take questions from students in real time during a class period, or you can let them submit questions ahead of time asychronously. I think this could be a really great way to faciliate a review session before an Exam or something you could use with a guest speaker.

Reason 2: Real-time Quizzes (Like Kahoot, but WAY more chill)
If your students like quiz games like Kahoot, but you’re looking for something a little more mature, reserved, or chill, you may really like Slido quizzes. You can add up to 30 multiple choice questions to a quiz, add a timer, and even show a leader board to track student’s progress through the quiz.

Reason 3: Options for Polling and Anayltics
In addition to strict Q&A and multiple choice quizzes, Slido offers a lot of different options for Poll types … AND for analytics you can use after a poll is done.
Different poll types include Multiple choice, Word Cloud, Quiz, Rating, Open Text, and Ranking polls. Also notice on the screenshot below that there is a “My polls” option which lets you easily duplicate any poll or quiz you’ve already created.

On the analytics side, there are even MORE options to choose from. You get a general overview of participant engagement, a word cloud based on Q&A responses, specific information about various polls and qizzes, and even a way to generate infographic or downloadable versions of those analytics with a single click.

Reason 4: Integration with Microsoft Teams
As of writing this post, I haven’t had a chance to test out the Teams/Slido integration yet, but it looks simple to add Slido as an add-on to your Teams Meetings and workspaces.

Reason 5: Generous Free Plan
Slido is a “freemium” tool, meaning that you can use it for free, but get more options and functionality when you purchase a license. However, unlike a lot of freemium tools, I think Slido is one where the free plan is going to be completely sufficient for 99% of our instructors. The main limitations of the free plan seem to be:
- limit of 100 participants
- 3 polls per “Event” (but unlimited Events)
- No option for moderation of Q&A sessions (approving questions before they’re posted), but you can remove questions after they have been posted)
- Branding or Data exports
