T2MTU: Customizing Canvas Notifications
February 22, 2022
*PS: This week's T2MTU video post is your final opportunity to earn more entries in ID3's "Two-Nup" Thunder Tickets Giveaway. Scroll down to submit your entry for this week, or click HERE for more information about the Giveaway.
Notifications are a great way for Instructors and Students to set up Canvas so that it gives them prompts about timely events inside a Canvas course that need attention. (Recently updated grades, recently submitted Assignments, course Announcements, etc.)
In this week’s Tuesday 2-Minute Tune Up Video, I’ll show you how to customize what notifications you receive, and tailor those settings to individual courses.
Click on the video below, or keep scrolling for written directions (AND this week’s Contest Entry form)!!!
Customizing Canvas Notifications
- To customize your notifications for a specific Canvas course, click on the “View Course Notifications” button on the right hand side of that course’s homepage.
- On this screen you can customize the notifications you receive from this course specifically.
- Enable or disable notifications from this course altogether.
- If you have accessed the Canvas app from a mobile device, you should see the option to turn on “Push Notifications” for that device on the Canvas app.
- Click on an icon to enable (green) or disable (black) that notification, to be received either via email or via push notification.
- If you know you want to set up similar notifications for all of your courses, you can also update your “default” notifications on the account level, by clicking on the “Account” icon in the leftmost side of your screen and selecting “Notifications.”
- The screen for customizing system notifications works in the same way as it does on the course-level notifications page. With one addition: on the system notifications page, you will see a drop down menu (1) that lets you select whether you want to update notifications for your Account (all courses) or for a specific course. Also take note of any notification messages that appear at the top of this screen (2).
Any changes you make to notification settings, on the course or account level, will save automatically – there is no save button on these screens.
