Gradebook Search Fields

The more completed and complicated your Canvas gradebook gets, the more important it becomes to be able to find specific students or assignments within the gradebook quickly. Luckily, Canvas recently rolled out an update to make this process just a bit easier.

  • Go to the Grades screen of your course, and notice the two Search Bars that appear above the Grades spreadsheet. (You used to only be able to search by student, but now there are Search Bars for both Students and for Assignments.) Click in the appropriate box, and notice how a drop down menu appears.
  • You can either select the student or assignment you want from the drop down, or you can type part or all of the student or assignment you wish to access in the text field; then click it or hit Enter.

  • This will essentially filter your gradebook down to JUST the student and/or assignments you have selected. (Click here for more information on other ways to use Gradebook filters)

Note: You will still see all of your Assignment Group average columns in the gradebook, even with a search or filter added. These are the columns that you will NOT be able to type grades into.

  • To remove a “search” from your Gradebook, click the “x” that appears next to your searched item in the Search box.

⭐ One quick note, if you find yourself using these Search boxes a lot in the gradebook, it might be time to give your gradebook a good clean up; contact your ID3 Specialist if you would like help streamlining your gradebook to reduce your grading time.
