Creating Basic (Classic) Quizzes
This tutorial will show you how to create a basic quiz inside Canvas using the “Classic Quizzes” tool. Note: there are “shortcuts” and additional tools that can be used if you do not want to create each quiz question individually in Canvas. Contact ID3 for more information about these shortcut tools.
- Click on “Quizzes” in your course navigation menu; then click “+Quiz” to start a new quiz.
(For this tutorial, if you see a pop-up asking you to choose between “Classic” and “New” Quizzes, choose Classic.)

2. On the “Details” tab, you can enter the title of your quiz, and some basic directions. There are many settings you can customize below the Instructions box, but we’ll cover those in another tutorial – you can leave the default settings for now.

2. Click on the “Questions” tab, and then on the “+ New Question” button to start creating your quiz questions.

3. Choose your question type from the drop down menu. Detailed tutorials for each question type are linked below. Note – all of these question types are auto-grading except for those marked with *

- Multiple Choice
- True/False
- Fill-in-the-Blank
- Fill-in-Multiple-Blanks
- Multiple Answers
- Multiple Drop-down (can be used for Likert scale)
- Matching
- Numerical Answer
- Formula (simple formula and single variable)
- Essay *
- File Upload *
- When you are finished, click “Save” or “Save & Publish” at the bottom of the page to finalize your Quiz, and/or make it available to your students.

This will take you back to the main Quizzes screen. From here you can “Publish” your quiz (if you didn’t already), “Preview” it (which lets you test out the quiz and your feedback), or go back in to “Edit” it.
