T2MTU: Final Grade Override
The Canvas Gradebook is designed to auto-calculate and display students’ final grades, but what if you want to override that final grade for some reason, so that it’s a manually-entered final grade — and not a calculated one — that appears for your students?
In this week’s Tuesday 2 Minute Tune Up, I’m going to show you the two steps needed to set up the Final Grade Override in the Canvas Gradebook.
Click on the video below to view, or keep scrolling for written directions.
Set up Final Grade Override in Canvas
- Step 1: Go to Settings > Feature Previews within your Canvas course, and Enable the “Final Grade Override” option. (Note: this setting change will auto-save, there is no save or submit button.)

- Step 2: Go to your course Gradebook, and click on the Settings Gear icon.

- Then click on “Advanced,” and select “Allow final grade override.” Then click “Apply Settings.”

This will cause a column labeled “Override” to appear on the far right hand side of your gradebook screen. Click into the Override cell of the student whose grade you wish to update, and then type the grade, hitting tab or enter to save.

⭐ NOTE: you will not be able to enter an override grade for a student if they have not yet earned any other grades in the course.
⭐⭐Bonus Tip: You can change the format of your Total and Override column to a letter grade by going to Settings and checking the “Enable course grading scheme” checkbox. (Please contact ID3 if you need help setting up grading schemes within your course.)
